Thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their friends, relatives and allies gathered at Exchange Place on the Jersey City waterfront Saturday to participate in the city’s 13th Annual Gay Pride Festival.

Jeffrey Campbell, executive director of the Hudson Pride Connections Center, one of the organizers of the festival, said the event was not only a party, but also a time to discuss issues confronting the LGBT community, such as hate crimes and marriage equality.

“We’re lifting those types of conversations,” he said.

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, speaking briefly from a makeshift stage near the Katyn Memorial, said Jersey City has the largest LGBT community in the state and called for marriage equality.

“We are proud, excited, and motivated you are here today,” he said. “New Jersey should be a progressive state, but unfortunately we didn’t follow through on marriage equality.”
