“Black Men of the World”, Photography by Jermaine D. Clark

The Hudson Pride Connections Center will present Jermaine D Clark/”Black Men of the World”, from April 7 through May 2, 2012, at the Hudson Pride Connections Center.  The exhibit features 30 portraits of local Black men of various ages and socio-economic backgrounds in 13×19 digital archival prints.

“A tribute to Black men.  By stripping the subjects of many social constructs, it freed them/us to show the person we are.  It frees the spirit to soar and lose the limitations set by our environment.  We are Black men who are beautiful, strong, confident, distinguished and intelligent.  Can the world see stereotypes in us, if a social construct such as fashion is missing?  I want the viewer to see us for who we are, human.  With this exhibit of images, it is time to shed the bondages of hyper individuality in society and come back together as a collective.” Jermaine D. Clark

With this exhibit, Clark hopes to lay a foundation for a new renaissance that will expose people to positive images of Black men young and old and at different stages in life.  Some are accomplished in their own right and role models for what we might aspire to be.  Others are just eager and excited to be starting down the path towards manhood.  Each has the potential to teach and learn from the other without hesitation or excessive ego in the knowledge they possess.

Photographer and Jersey City resident, Jermaine D. Clark has a degree in Journalism and Mass Media from Rutgers University, where he also studied under Dawoude Bey.  Clark strives to capture the person in the image and not just the image.

“This exhibit is another step in the Hudson Pride Center’s overall plan to provide greater support and cultural services to the residents of Jersey City and Hudson County.  We are very excited to be partnering with Jermaine Clark and other local artists.  This partnership will raise awareness about the vast talent in our community,” said Jonathan Lucas, Interim Executive Director of the Hudson Pride Connections Center.

Meet and greet with the photographer and models Saturday, April 7, 2012 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Hudson Pride Connections Center, 32 Jones Street, Jersey City, NJ 07306. 201-963-4779.
