Hudson Pride Connections Center and Journal Square Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Group Launches 2012 Program

JERSEY CITY – On Monday, March 12th at 6:30 p.m., The Journal Square Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group and Hudson Pride Connections Center (HPCC) will host an open meeting with CSA organizers and farmer, Sergio Nolasco, at the Hudson Pride Connections Center (HPCC). The meeting is open to anyone interested in learning more about local foods, farming, and CSA, and will feature healthy snacks.

The CSA is a membership-based organization that provides members with fresh produce free of chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers. All items are sourced locally from the Nolasco Farm in Andover, New Jersey. Unlike a farmer’s market, a CSA encourages members to try new vegetables by providing a variety of six to eight types of vegetables, herbs, or melons each week. Registration for the CSA will begin in March. Starting June 4th though October 2012, members can pick up their weekly produce Monday evenings at the Hudson Pride Connections Center, 32 Jones Street, near Journal Square. CSA shares the $455 cost for the 22-week season and 100% of the proceeds will go to the farm. Each share provides enough food for two to three people, and excess food will be donated to a local restaurant to provide free meals to those in need.

“This move is another step in our overall plan to provide greater support and services to the residents of Jersey City and Hudson County. We are very excited to be partnering with the Journal Square CSA. This partnership will raise awareness and bring healthy eating options to our community,” said Jonathan Lucas, Interim Executive Director of the Hudson Pride Connections Center.

Interested persons will have the opportunity to meet CSA organizers and farmer Nolasco on Monday, March 12, 2012 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Hudson Pride Connections Center, 32 Jones Street, Jersey City, NJ 07306.

To RSVP for the meeting or to get more information on the CSA, email JournalSquareCSA@gmail.com or visit the group’s Web site at http://journalsquarecsa.weebly.com.

Please refer to HPCC’s Web site www.hudsonpride.org for updates.
