Hudson Pride Center Stands Up for Shithole Countries

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Jersey City stands proud in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, forever greeting immigrants at Ellis Island.  Perhaps that is why our City is this beautiful melting pot of diversity and multiculturalism. We have a history of appreciating and empowering the influences of different people, cultures, and beliefs.

It’s a blessing and a responsibility that each and every citizen of this diverse immigrant City can carry with great distinction. The history of our City is as the Golden Door to the United States. Our home is the path that lead generations of immigrants to a land willing and honored to embrace the world’s tired and poor. To embrace the world’s huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Hudson Pride Center is proud to be a home and a voice for that diverse community. As the largest LGBTQ Center in the state, we speak up together to denounce the words of the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

There will come a day when we will be asked: Did you speak up? Did you speak up when the President spoke with pride and ease of his disdain for people of color and immigrants? Or did you just shake it off as one more offensive thing this President has done? We can’t be silent! We must fight every battle that we can as long as we have a voice! We ask that every Elected Official, every Business Owner, every Non-Profit Leader in Jersey City speak up by publicly denouncing the President with the hashtags #JerseyCityStands #ShitholeCountries. We ask this because at the very least we owe it to our immigrant population and our communities of color to stand with them. We owe it to our youth to teach them the power of community values. And we owe it to this great diverse city, Jersey City, which so many of us call home. Thank you.

Michael Billy, CEO of Hudson Pride Center
